Software developer and blogger extraordinaire Dave Winer speculates in his "Scripting News" weblog that Google is developing an iTunes clone that "probably works great with cell phones, unlike iTunes itself which works great with iPods (of course)."
iTunes recently added a category for adding podcasts to your download list, resulting in a huge increase in people who are listening to podcasts. If Google is indeed developing an iTunes-like service that is optimized for cellular phones, it's certainly likely to increase wireless podcast use.
Dave suggests that through the venture capitalist Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers connection -- Adam Curry's Podshow (see left), that has an investment from Kleiner Perkins) -- will be the first to provide podcasts for Google's iTunes clone. (Kleiner Perkins has a board seat on Google, Dave notes.)
As I've written previously here and here, two companies have announced services for cellular: Pod2Mob, that offers podcasting downloading for Sprint PCS phones now, and Melodeo, that will introduce a podcasting service for cellular phones next month.
