It's beginning: Computer magazines are starting to discuss the quality of listening to podcasts as one more positive aspect of a cellular phone.
The most recent (February 21) issue of PC Magazine (no story posted online yet) says about the Sony Ericsson W600i Walkman (see below), "The cute, bright Sony Ericsson W600i Walkman is one of the best gaming phones we've ever seen, and it's superb for listening to podcasts. Because of this we're still willing to recommend it, despite its average performance on phone calls."
It's interesting that the main reason many people purchase cellular phones -- for voice conversations -- is becoming just a bit less important, and data features are becoming more important. For example, the Treo 600 and 650 were not known for great voice quality, but they became almost cult favorites (I'm a big fan) because of their rich data capabilities.
Not wireless, but...
PC Magazine's review doesn't discuss the W600i in terms of receiving podcasts via wireless. Instead, it discusses the ease of transferring podcasts and other audio files via a computer.
"We must add that the mass-storage mode, which lets the phone show up on your Mac, PC or Linux desktop as a hard drive [I wish many other phones would work this way!], make the W600i perfect for podcasts -- just pick one up and drop it onto the phone.
"We transferred a 56.5MB podcast in about 3 and a half minutes," the article says.
