Stan Sorensenm, the senior director of product management and marketing at wireless podcasting company Melodeo, outlines four possible ways to make money in the podcasting business, according to an article in Forbes magazine.
The article lists Sorensenm's podcasting revenue sources as:
"* Embedding advertising in the audio itself. Basically, this uses the traditional model of radio.
"* Free and premium channels. This is how many content sites make money. There may even be subscription services, kind of like a magazine.
"* An enterprise model. This would mean selling sophisticated products to major customers that would have special features, such as security.
"* Advertising, which is currently the predominant approach."
My take
I think there are a variety of ways the wireless industry can generate income from podcasts, such as the methods Sorensenm notes.
The cellular industry needs to reach out not only to big media companies but also to individual podcasters about creating shows specifically for wireless listeners. I'm somewhat plugged into the podcasting environment and there are some great individual podcasters.
Although some podcasters might want to keep their shows free, I have no doubt that many podcasters would jump at a chance to get some money for their efforts.
